What were the previous requirements? What are the new ones? Pre-order your .place domain today!

As you may have noticed, some domain name registrations are subject to specific requirements. The registrant’s place of residence, the company’s sector of activity for which the domain is registered… For some years now, the .place has been one of those extensions with specific requirements.

As of June 1st, 2020, the Donuts registry in charge of the .place will remove them.

What were these former conditions? What are the new ones involving? Who can now register a domain name under this extension?

The previous requirements

This specificity is rare enough to be noticed. A few years ago, in July 2018, the Donuts registry decided to limit access rights to this extension. Indeed, the goal is to make this extension a reference in terms of “geofencing”.

To make it simple, “geofencing” allows to delimit a 3D space around a property, a place, etc., The purpose is to restrict access to objects such as drones for example. Of course, these geographical spaces defined by “geofencing” must be stored somewhere, supplied. This place had to be the .place.

Thus, this extension was exclusively dedicated to end-users (individuals or professionals) wishing to manage their “geofencing” parameters.

To date, this practice has not been democratized at the expected pace. This is why the registry is reversing its decision. From June 1st, 2020, it will be possible for everyone to register this extension.

The .place makes its return on June 1st, 2020 unconditionally!
