.si domain names: when “Super Intelligence” shakes things up

Find out why .si domain name registrations have soared since late September 2026, and whether you should register yours.

Since late September 2026, registrations of .si domain names, Slovenia’s official extension, have reached record levels. The reason: the US administration’s decision to replace “artificial intelligence” (AI) with “Super Intelligence” (SI). For businesses, this is above all the time to secure their .si domain name before someone else does.

Background

On September 29, 2026, Donald Trump signed an executive order directing US federal agencies to replace the terms “artificial intelligence” and “AI” with “Super Intelligence” and “SI”. This decision follows his September 22 speech at the United Nations General Assembly, in which he said the term “artificial intelligence” sounded wrong.

This change in terminology has had consequences for the .si extension. As it is Slovenia’s official top level domain, .si has been strongly affected by the announcement, and the impact is turning out to be very positive.

Sharp rise in .si domain name registrations

According to statistics published by Register.si, the registry responsible for the Slovenian extension, .si domain name registrations have risen sharply since late September:

  • August 2026: around 3,500 new .si domain names for the month;
  • September 2026: more than 44,000 new .si domain names, an increase of more than 1,100%;
  • September 30: 11,000 registrations in one day, the day after the executive order was signed;
  • early October: around 12,800 registrations in 24 hours, an unprecedented level for the extension.

Is the .si domain name the next .ai?

This is not the first time a ccTLD has reached beyond its borders because its two letters took on another meaning:

  • .ai, the extension of Anguilla, a Caribbean island, became the go-to extension for artificial intelligence companies, because “AI” stands for “artificial intelligence”;
  • .io, the extension of the British Indian Ocean Territory, became popular with developers and tech start-ups, because “I/O” means “input/output” in computing.
  • .tv, the extension of Tuvalu, is used by TV channels and video platforms, for “television”.

With .si, companies, start-ups and investors are betting on the same scenario: if the term “SI” catches on, .si domain names will gain value.

Should you register a .si domain name?

It depends on your situation.

  • You have a brand to protect: this is the clearest case. The Slovenian registry itself advises holders of trademarks, slogans and company names to register their .si domain name without delay. With the surge in demand, the risk of someone else registering your name is rising.
  • You work in AI or tech: a .si domain name can be a short, timely address alongside your main one.
  • You see it as an investment: be careful. The executive order only covers how US federal agencies refer to the technology. There is no guarantee the term “SI” will last, and the registry itself refrains from attributing the current situation to this announcement.

Our recommendation

Netim also saw a clear increase in searches for and registrations of the .si extension in late September.

We recommend approaching .si from a protection angle rather than a speculative one. Registering a domain name costs little, and recovering it once someone else has registered it is usually far longer and more expensive. If your project is closely linked to artificial intelligence, or “super intelligence”, it therefore makes sense to consider registering your .si domain name.
