Why separate my website hosting from my email hosting?
Discover the advantages of separating your email hosting and website hosting for more freedom and security.

Today, many users choose convenience by centralising all their services with a single provider: domain name, website hosting, email… However, this “all-in-one” approach can quickly show its limitations and become a source of constraints.
At Netim, we have recently made the strategic decision to end our web hosting services, in order to refocus on our core business and what we do best: managing your domain names and email addresses.
In this article, we explain why it is recommended to separate the services related to your online presence, and why Netim has chosen this repositioning to better support its clients.
What are the differences between domain name, web hosting and email hosting?
Before talking about separating these services, let’s briefly review the different elements that make up a web infrastructure.
The domain name
The domain name is the address that users type in to access your website (example: yourcompany.com
). It is managed via a registrar such as Netim, which allows you to register, renew and configure your domain, as well as configure your nameservers through your zone files.
Web hosting
This is the space where your website’s files are stored (pages, images, CSS style sheets, JavaScript scripts, etc…). It is provided by a web host that makes one or more servers available, enabling your website to be visible on the internet. Once a domain name has been registered with a registrar, you subscribe to a web hosting plan with a provider, then configure the DNS records of your domain name to point to the hosting.
Email hosting
Email hosting is not required to create a website, and similarly, you can use an email host without having a website. However, for a business that already has a website, it is more professional to have a custom email address linked to your domain name, such as contact@yourcompany.com
. After registering your domain with a registrar, the email host provides mail servers on which your emails and contacts will be stored.
What are the advantages of separating my email from my web hosting?
At first sight, it may seem complicated and uncomfortable to separate your services and use different providers for each. However, this is a very good practice, increasingly adopted by users who care about security and freedom in their online presence. Here’s why you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket.
Strengthen the security of your online services
When all your services are hosted with a single provider, if a problem occurs (technical failure, hacking or dispute), your entire online business is compromised!
Divide and manage better: by keeping them apart, you limit the impact of an incident. If your web host goes down, your email still works, and vice versa.
Gain performance and flexibility
Each web service has its own requirements, and each provider has its strengths. By choosing specialised providers, you adapt your tools to your needs, not the other way around. Moreover, note that it is often less expensive to separate each service than to choose an “all-in-one” solution whose performance or options may not suit your needs (for example, some online site builders may sell your domain name at a much higher price than the market rate).
From a technical perspective, separating email from web hosting helps optimise server resource usage. This prevents email from using up the bandwidth allocated to your site.
Control your DNS services and simplify migrations
Some “all-in-one” solutions restrict the management of DNS records. When you manage your domain name through a specialised registrar, you retain control over your DNS records, which are essential for the proper functioning of your website and the deliverability of your emails.
Thus, changing web host becomes much easier when your domain name and emails are not tied to it: there’s no need to transfer your domain name or reconfigure your entire email – you only need to adjust the DNS records in your zone file via your registrar (and trust us, it’s not as complicated as it seems!)
Choose freedom and scalability
Ultimately, separating your web services is choosing independence! It’s the freedom to choose the best providers for each need, not to depend on a single supplier, and to switch hosts or email services whenever you wish, without disrupting your domain name or email addresses.
By separating your services, you adopt an approach that allows you to evolve more easily, according to the needs of your business, as it grows and develops.
