How to secure your customer account and protect your data effectively?

With the rise of cybercrime, protecting access to your online customer accounts has become an absolute necessity to safeguard your personal data, protect your business, and prevent financial losses. In this article, discover some best practices to implement to secure your online accounts and reduce the risk of fraud.

Your customer accounts are goldmines: personal data, addresses, phone numbers, and banking details are all valuable resources that a malicious individual could exploit without your knowledge.
In the domain name sector, an insecure customer account with a Registrar can lead to disastrous consequences. Imagine a cybercriminal taking control of your account: they could modify your information, transfer your domain names without your consent, create fraudulent email redirects or subdomains, or even entirely hijack your website to a phishing URL.

So, how can you prevent the worst? Here are some best practices to adopt to strengthen your account security and avoid any attempted identity theft.

Best Practices for Securing Your Customer Account

Below are several tips to apply to maximise the security of your online customer accounts. All the solutions presented below are available at Netim.

🔒 Create and Use Strong Passwords

Still too often overlooked, your password is your first line of defence against attacks. It must be complex: at least 12 characters, with a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.

Avoid personal information such as your birth date or first name and opt for password generators, combined with a password manager for secure storage. Lastly, never use the same password across multiple accounts to prevent a domino effect in the event of a data breach.

🔑 Switch to Passkeys for Maximum Security

Passkeys offer an efficient alternative to traditional passwords. Based on advanced encryption, they enable fast and highly secure authentication without requiring password input.

Passkeys are stored locally on your device (not on servers) and require biometric validation (fingerprint, facial recognition) or a PIN code to confirm access. As a result, they are resistant to phishing attempts and remote ID theft.

📲 Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Even a complex password can be compromised. This is why two-factor authentication, by adding an extra step to the login process, significantly reduces fraud risks.

When logging in, in addition to your password, a temporary code sent to your phone (via SMS) or through an authentication app (such as Google Authenticator) will be required.

🛡️ Verify Email Authenticity with Anti-Phishing Protection

Phishing is one of the most common online threats. At Netim, we have implemented an innovative system: a personalised anti-phishing code. This feature allows each customer to set a unique protection code (a word or phrase) from their customer area. This code will appear in all official emails sent by Netim.

Thus, if an email claims to be from Netim but does not contain your personalised code, you will immediately know it is a fraudulent attempt.

🔔 Stay Informed with Login Alerts and Login History

Knowing when and where your account is accessed can help you detect any suspicious activity. With email login alerts and an login history, you can keep an eye on every login attempt. If you detect an unusual connection, you can take immediate action by changing your password and contacting customer support.

📧 Set Up a Recovery Email Address

Securing your account also (and above all) involves prevention! No one is immune to forgetting or losing access to their primary email account. By adding a backup email address in your account settings, you ensure you can always regain access to your online account if needed.

🚧 Restrict Access with IP Restrictions

If you always access your account from specific locations (for example, from home and office), you can configure restrictions to limit logins to a particular IP address or range.

This feature prevents logins from unauthorised IP addresses and blocks any intrusion attempts from other devices.

🛠️ Manage Access with Role-Based Permissions

🤝 Do you work in a team or with external companies?
Soon, Netim will allow you to assign specific access rights to other users. For example, you will be able to allow a service provider to carry out specific tasks without exposing all account functionalities.

Securing your customer account should not be optional: it must be a priority. In cybersecurity, the best defence is anticipation! So, take a few minutes to improve your account security and adopt the right habits now.
