URL Redirects: All the ways to use them to get the most out of your domain name
Discover how to use URL redirection to protect your brand, centralise your online presence, and simplify your communication, even without a website.

When you register a domain name, it’s usually to host a website. However, a domain name can serve many other purposes, even if you don’t have a website. With URL redirection, you can automatically send visitors to another page, platform, or specific content.
Redirection offers numerous possibilities: protecting your brand, centralising your online presence, or simplifying your communication. In this article, discover several practical uses of domain name redirections, whether you’re a business, freelancer, creator, or simply a private individual who owns a domain name.
Redirection to protect and manage your domain
When creating your website: defensive redirections
When you want to protect your brand, you register a domain name like brand.com. A common security practice is to register other variants (with and without hyphens if your brand name consists of multiple words, or with different extensions relevant to your market), such as:
- yourbrand.com
- yourbrand.fr
- your-brand.com
- your-brand.fr
These are called defensive registrations. They help protect your brand from cybersquatting and prevent competitors or malintentioned persons from using a domain similar to yours.
Next, you need to set up redirections from all variants of your domain names to your main domain. This way, no matter which URL a user visits, they will always reach your official website.
301 Redirect (Permanent): the browser and search engines are informed that the page has permanently moved. SEO value is passed to the new URL. This is the default choice for any long-term change.
302 Redirect (Temporary): the redirection is temporary; search engines keep the original URL in their index. Useful for A/B testing, maintenance pages, or limited-time promotions.
👉 301 redirects are the most commonly used in terms of SEO.
During a website redesign: redirect old URLs
If you are redesigning your website, changing your CMS, or simply restructuring your categories or product pages, 301 redirects from your old URLs to your new pages are essential. Why?
- To preserve your SEO: The SEO “juice” will be passed from the old page to the new one. Without redirection, your ranking would start from scratch.
- To keep your backlinks: All links pointing to your site from other websites will continue to send traffic your way.
- To facilitate crawling: Search engine bots will discover your new URLs more quickly.
URL Redirection: sends the visitor to a new address. The URL visible in the browser changes. This is what this article is about.
URL Rewriting: the URL displayed in the browser stays the same, but behind the scenes, the server actually loads another resource. It’s invisible to the user. For example, your site might generate URLs like /product.php?id=123&cat=shoes. With rewriting (rules defined in the .htaccess file), you could display /shoes/product-123 instead. This is more readable and SEO-friendly.
👉 Two different uses: redirection changes the destination, rewriting changes the URL appearance.
When changing your domain name: redirect to the new domain
Are you changing your brand name? Moving to a different extension? There are many reasons to change your domain name, but you should never abandon your old domain. We recommend renewing it instead.
This helps both to protect your old brand and prevent identity theft, and to set up redirections to your new domain, which will allow you to:
- Transfer all SEO authority accumulated on the old domain to the new one
- Prevent frustrating 404 errors if a user visits an old domain address
- And of course retain your traffic and ensure continuity of your services
👉 Keep redirects active for at least 1 to 2 years after the change, or even indefinitely if the old name has strong brand recognition or still generates significant traffic (or simply for another use or for resale if your domain has value: on that note, find out how to estimate the value of a domain name 💡).
⚠️ What if you let your old domain expire without renewing it? Some companies specialise in tracking down expired domains with strong SEO potential. They register them as soon as they become available and redirect them to their own site, cashing in on all the work you have put in… A good reason to never let a valuable old domain go to waste.
Redirection to centralise your online presence
Today, digital presence is no longer limited to a single website. There are numerous points of contact and online interactions: website, social networks, external tools and platforms, hosted documents… In this context, if you own a domain name, redirection is a powerful way to bring order, whether you have a website or not!
If you are present on many social networks, you know that profile URLs are often long and hard to share verbally or on a business card.
A good use of redirection is to create short, memorable, and permanent addresses for your different social profiles. For example, if you are known as “SuperSeb“, you can register the domain superseb.com and use it to redirect to your profiles as follows:
| SOCIAL NETWORK | SUBDOMAIN EXAMPLE |
|---|---|
fb.superseb.com |
|
ig.superseb.com |
|
| X (Twitter) | x.superseb.com |
| YouTube | yt.superseb.com |
| TikTok | tk.superseb.com |
| Linktree / Taplink / Beacons (or other link hub) | superseb.com |
👉 These links use the main domain superseb.com with a subdomain placed before it, such as fb..
Creating a subdomain involves adding a type A DNS record (like fb) in your DNS zone: a process that takes less than two minutes!
You can then set up the redirect from your Facebook profile to fb.superseb.com. To do so, go to the redirect settings in your provider’s control panel. If you are with Netim, here is the guide to configure your redirects.
You can find your zone file in your registrar’s admin panel (like Netim) or through your DNS provider.

Redirection for freelancers or creators: brand identity
As explained above with social networks, redirection can help you structure an entire galaxy of links around a single domain using subdomains:
| CONTENT type | Platform examples | Subdomain example |
|---|---|---|
| Store / Seller page | Amazon, Shopify | shop.superseb.com |
| Creator page | Etsy, Patreon | art.superseb.com |
| Appointment booking tool | Planity, Calendly | rdv.superseb.com |
| Music creations | Bandcamp, Soundcloud | music.superseb.com |
| Podcasts | Deezer, Spotify, Apple | podcast.superseb.com |
| Webinar | Livestorm, Zoho, Zoom | workshop.superseb.com |
| Guides or resources to share | PDF, Drive, download link | ebook.superseb.com |
All access points around your professional activity and creations are thus centralised on links that reflect your identity: clean, short, professional, and easy to share and remember.
This list of examples isn’t exhaustive, but anything is possible to strengthen your brand coherence while keeping your content hosted on other platforms with their advantages.
With URL redirects, you become completely independent from external platforms. If you ever decide to switch platforms or tools, for example moving from Wix to Shopify, you won’t need to update your link across all your communication materials (articles, print medias, etc.). Simply update your redirect URL, and your
shop.superseb.com link will still work perfectly!
Redirection for your job search: personal branding
Imagine sharing cv.yourname.com on your business card, email signature, or LinkedIn profile… Pretty neat, right? 😏
Thanks to a domain name and subdomains, you could redirect recruiters, prospects, or partners directly to your CV, portfolio, projects, or an online profile:
| USE | TOOL | SUBDOMAIN EXAMPLE |
|---|---|---|
| CV | PDF hosted on Google Drive, for example | cv.yourname.com |
| Cover letter | Google Doc or hosted PDF | whychoose.yourname.com |
| Portfolio | Drive with presentations, creations | portfolio.yourname.com |
| Professional social profile | LinkedIn / GitHub / Fiverr… | linkedin.yourname.com |
👉 Beyond giving a professional and coherent image, this approach has a practical advantage for your job search: it shows your digital skills, which is a positive signal in many industries.
Redirection to simplify communication
Beyond centralising and harmonising your online presence, as we have seen, redirections can also and particulary be used to make your communication smoother and facilitate the sharing of content via simple URLs.
For your marketing campaigns
Some digital or physical media, like a billboard, flyer, video, radio spot, or podcast, cannot communicate long URLs. In these cases, redirection is the perfect ally to create a short, memorable link directly related to your message. Here are some usage examples:
| CONTENT TYPE | SUBDOMAIN EXAMPLE |
|---|---|
| Current offer or promotion | blackfriday.brand.com |
| Launch video | video.brand.com |
| Event registration page | event.brand.com |
| Game contest | contest.brand.com |
offer.brand.com: this is a subdomain. Google technically considers it as a separate website. The SEO authority of your main domain is not transferred. Easy to set up and no hosting required, it is ideal for redirecting to external platforms.
brand.com/offer : this is a subdirectory (or subfolder). Google considers it as an integral part of your website. The SEO authority built up on your domain also benefits these pages. This is the technique to favour only if you have a website and if SEO is a priority for that page 💡 In that case, also consider URL rewriting rather than a redirect (see the info box above). ⚠️ Bear in mind, however, that subdirectories are more complex to set up and absolutely require web hosting.
For your documents and forms
Again, the goal here is to simplify your links. When sharing a document from a drive, a Google Form, survey, or hosted PDF, the generated URL is usually long and impossible to remember. Depending on the media used for your communications, it can be useful to set up redirects to clean and memorable links:
| CONTENT TYPE | SUBDOMAIN EXAMPLE |
|---|---|
| Downloadable document | guide.brand.com |
| External Drive | kit.brand.com |
| Form or survey | survey.brand.com |
👉 Today, suspicious links are everywhere. Redirecting long links from external platforms through your own domain helps reassure users and keep your brand visible from the first click.
For your affiliate links
In affiliate campaigns, tracking URLs provided by partner platforms are often long and obviously affiliate links, which can discourage some users. Set up redirects from your domain gives you a clean and short link containing your brand, which helps maintain user trust.
Another technique exists: link cloaking.
Unlike a redirection that shows the original link in the browser, link cloaking keeps the displayed URL unchanged. You arrive at example.brand.com and stay there, even if the content loaded in the background comes from a partner site. Its implemention requires more complex techniques, plugins, or dedicated tools.
| METHOD | CLICKED LINK (REDIRECTI) | LOADED LINK | VISIBLE LINK IN BROWSER |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic redirect | product.brand.com |
https://www.partner-site.com/product?tracking=123 |
https://www.partner-site.com/product?tracking=123 |
| Link cloaking | product.brand.com |
https://www.partner-site.com/product?tracking=123 |
product.brand.com |
However, link cloaking is often associated with deceptive practices and can sometimes be blocked or or flagged as spam by certain systems.
That’s why for the vast majority of uses, a standard redirect from your own domain is more than sufficient: it’s simpler and without any surprises.
And all this with just one domain name
Ultimately, URL redirect is much more than a technical tool: it is a veritable lever for brand protection and identity, communication, and organisation of your online presence. Whether you have a website or not, whether you are a brand or an individual, whether you want to secure your brand, simplify campaigns, or centralise all your profiles, it allows you to imagine a wide range of possibilities and uses.
