[UPDATE] BREXIT: How to keep your .EU domain name(s) if you live in UK

Find out about the consequences of BREXIT for UK-based .EU holders.

[Update of 2020-06-08: new calendar]

2020-10-01: EURid will inform all UK registrants by email that they will lose their eligibility as of 1 January 2021, unless they prove their compliance with the Registry regulations by updating their registration data.
2020-12-21: if no change is made, registrants who still do not meet the eligibility requirements will be contacted a second time.
2021-01-01 00:00:00 CET: the domain name(s) of holders not complying with EURid regulations will be WITHDRAWN.
As of 1 January 2021 00:00:00 CET, the domain name(s) of any UK registrant who has not demonstrated eligibility will be REMOVED.
As of 1 January 2022 00:00:00 CET, all the affected domain names will be REVOKED and will become AVAILABLE for general registration in batches.

[Update 2020-01-31] The United Kingdom left the European Union on 31 January 2020 at midnight (CET). After full ratification of the Withdrawal Agreement, the UK and the EU entered into the so-called “transition period”.
This time-limited period was agreed as part of the Withdrawal Agreement and will last until 31 December 2020 at least. During the transition period UK residents and citizens will continue to be able to hold and register a .eu domain name.

In order to secure your domain at the end of this transition period, we strongly recommend using our trustee service especially for the following extensions (.eu, .ευ, .ею, .bg, .fr, .hr, .it).

[Update 2019-10-28] The 27 agreed to accept the UK’s request for a flexible deferral of Brexit until January 31, 2020.
[Update 2019-10-03] News regarding the eligibility requirements. From now on, European Union citizens living in the United Kingdom will be allowed to register a .EU domain name.  The place of residence will not prevail over the individual nationality. 
[Update of 2019-04-11: Brexit postponed to 2019-10-31] Whatever the outcome of the debates, the UK and Gibraltar . EU domain names will have to be deleted. We strongly recommend to secure your domain names by using our trustee service, therefore your .eu domain names will be secured.

 

With the withdrawal of United Kingdom from the EU, the European Commission took a radical step regarding UK based domain names owners. 

Why will the .EU domain names will be influenced by the BREXIT?

The .eu is the official Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTld) of European Union and registrations are reserved to people/organization based this area. As UK will no longer be a part of the European Union the European commission has made the decision to revoke UK inhabitants’ rights on the .eu tld.

 

If nothing has changed before March 30, 273.000 domain names and maybe yours might be concerned by this decision. Some of the main consequences of the Brexit for .eu holders based in UK might be the loss of their websites, their emails and we go further the scratch of their SEO. Indeed, the time spent on ranking their .eu domain names might be lost with their websites, and they will need to restart their efforts with a new domain in order to rebuild their SEO strategy.

 

Currently United Kingdom are in talks with the European Commission regarding their withdrawal terms.

There are two possibles outcomes : 

 

  • If UK leaves the EU on 03/30/2019 with no agreement.

As of 03/30/2019: People based in UK will no longer be able to register .eu domain names or to renew it after the BREXIT.
From 03/30/2019 to 05/30/2019: Period during which people will can modify their contact information in accordance with Eurid’ requirements.
As of 05/03/2019: Domain names for which information hasn’t been updated will be withdrawn. They will be removed from Eurid’ zone file and will they no longer support activities, thus site and emails will be unavailable. Domains remain eligible for a reactivation the registrant fulfill the condition within the next 12 months period.
As of 03/30/2019: Domain names removed from the zone file will be revoked and will go back into public availability.

  • If UK leaves the EU on 03/30/2019 following the transitional period defined by the Withdrawal agreement.

As of 01/01/2021: People based in UK will no longer be able to register .eu domain names or to renew it.
From 01//2021 to 03/02/2020: Period during which people will can modify their contact information in accordance with Eurid’ requirements.
As of 03/02/2021: Domain names for which information hasn’t been updated will be withdrawn. They will be removed from Eurid’ zone file and will they no longer support activities, thus site and emails will be unavailable. Domains remain eligible for a reactivation the registrant fulfill the condition within the next 12 months period.
As of 01/01/2022: Domain names removed from the zone file will be revoked and will go back into public availability.

 

 How to keep my .eu domain names after the BREXIT?

 

If you’re a UK resident and also have a valid address in a European Union country (excluding UK) you can keep valid your .eu domain name(s) by updating your contact information.

 

However, if you do not fulfill this condition NETIM provides a local contact service which will allow you to keep your .eu domain name(s) and even to register new ones. As .eu restriction applies to the contact information level, our local contact service allows NETIM to be declared as administrative contact. if you want to benefit from this service, we invite you to transfer your domain name(s) to NETIM.
