It's official : .africa domain names will be available starting from June 19 ! After years of negotiating with the supreme domain name authority : ICANN, the South African organization ZA Central Registry (ZACR) finally becomes the official registry of this extension.
.africa history is a bit complicated, this extension has been for a while a subject of conflict between two organizations eligible for its adoption, ZACR and DotConnectAfrica (DCA), an organization based in Mauritius. In order to distinguish between these two contenders, ICANN made a rule to determine who will have the responsibility to market the .africa. The condition concerning the attribution of a geographical extension was to obtain the support from 60% of the concerned area's governments.
Initially, DCA announced receiving the support of the African Union Commission (AUC), but it didn't became responsible of the extension. Indeed, the AUC changed its decision and finally brought its support to the ZACR's application and ZACR was assigned as the official registry by the ICANN. This decision led DCA to request an internal review and then to file a claim against the ICANN by requesting the Federal Court of the United States to block the assignment of this extension.
It's finally the Superior Court of California that authorized the transfer resumption concerning the assignment of the attribution .africa to ZACR. By the way, as soon as this gtLD becomes available you will be able to register .africa domain here !
